Remembering one of Israel's most iconic leaders, Golda Meir

Golda Meir was born Golda Mabovitch in Kiev in 1898 and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1906. After she married, she and her husband immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1921 and joined a kibbutz.

Golda became very active in the Zionist movement and soon became one of the movement's most prominent members, resulting in her appointment as head of the Jewish Agency's political department in 1946.

In 1949 she was elected to the first Knesset and after holding various ministerial positions, was elected as Israel’s first female prime minister in 1969 – the world's third woman to hold such a position.

On December 8, 1978, Golda passed away at the age of 80.
