Al-Arabi Al-Jadid reported that recent Israeli attacks on the port of Latakia have exposed the involvement of French company CMA Terminals in helping the regime circumvent US sanctions.
The website noted that the French company, which cooperates with the Assad regime, assists in the import and export of weapons, drugs and food products, despite US sanctions under the Caesar Act. The site wondered how the world allows the transfer of unlicensed goods to and from, including weapons, without taking action to stop it.
The website, which quoted knowledgeable sources who declined to reveal their identities, claims that the Syrian 4th Division under the command of Major General Maher al-Assad, the brother of the regime president, is solely responsible for securing the port of Latakia.
The sources added: "Division 4 is overseeing the passage of drug smuggling operations and the importation of tobacco and cigarettes produced in the Jabal Ali area in the United Arab Emirates."
The paper stated that these activities are helping the Assad regime circumvent US sanctions under the "Caesar" law.
On June 17 last year, the United States imposed economic sanctions under the "Caesar's Law" on the Syrian regime and all its supporters.
It is worth noting that the administration of US President Joe Biden has recently eased the sanctions imposed on Bashar al-Assad and his regime, and it allows Egypt and Jordan to transfer energy to Lebanon via Syria despite the sanctions under the Caesar Act.
