Russia's Defense Ministry said joint air patrols by air forces along Syria's borders would become permanent. In recent years, Israel has repeatedly attacked positions in the Syrian Golan, where there is a presence of Hezbollah and Iranian militias.
Syrian and Russian fighter jets conducted joint air patrols along Syria's borders, including in the Golan Heights, today (Monday), Russia's Defense Ministry said, adding that the two Allied air force plans to make these patrols regular.
The air patrol, which included fighter jets, bombers and surveillance and control planes, is free in the area of the ceasefire line with Israel, which has often attacked positions in the Syrian Golan where there is a presence of Hezbollah and Iranian militias.
This month, residents and rebel insurgents said Russian planes had bombed areas near the northwestern Syrian city of Idlib, the last stronghold controlled by the opposition.
Russia has established a military presence in Syria since 2015, and helped tip the scales in the civil war in favor of President Bashar Assad, along with Iran and Hezbollah.
It has established a large air base in Latakia in the west of the country, and its activities in Syria require Israel to coordinate its own activities with Moscow. In recent weeks, the port of Latakia, near the Russian base, has been twice attacked in attacks attributed to Israel.
