UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutters believed that the strategic interests of the United States and Russia were the same in Syria.
"There is a difficult past in US-Russia relations in the context of Syria, but the strategic interests of both sides are one," Gutters said in a statement last Friday.
The Secretary-General expressed his hope that there would be closer cooperation between the two countries in order to move forward towards a political solution in Syria.
He noted that the decision to expand the bringing humanitarian aid to Syria across the border, which was reached last July, was the result of direct negotiations between Moscow and Washington.
He revealed that the decision was based on his proposal during his visit to Moscow last May, and he discussed the matter with the US administration, adding, "I was glad they reached an agreement based on the ideas I presented".
It is worth noting that last July the UN Security Council decided to extend the entry of humanitarian aid into Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey, for a period of one year.
