Turkey is approaching the nuclear era. Turkish President Erdogan announced over the weekend that the first nuclear reactor will be operational in May 2023. The reactor will be used for energy purposes and will be located in the south of the country, the Turkish leader stated during a visit to the city of Mersin.
Russia is involved in the construction of the reactor with no less than 3,000 engineers and they are supported by thousands of Turkish engineers. The agreement regarding the construction of the reactor was signed in 2010 when the Russian company "Rosatom" will own 99% of it. The reactor will have four units, each capable of producing 1200 megawatts.
Turkey has previously stated its desire to build another nuclear reactor in the country.
