Today marks 117 years since Theodor Herzl's passing.
.
Born in 1860, the "father of modern Zionism" dedicated his life to actively spreading the idea of re-establishing a state in the Jewish homeland.
In 1896, Herzl wrote “The Jewish State,” where he outlined the reasons for the Jewish people to leave Europe and return to their ancestral homeland. At Herzl’s considerable personal expense, he founded the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland in 1897.
He was elected President of the congress and began a series of diplomatic initiatives trying to build support for a Jewish homeland.
Unfortunately, Herzl died at the young age of 44 on July 3, 1904, and was not able to see his dream come to fruition.
"At Basel, I founded the Jewish State. If I said this out loud today, I would be answered by universal laughter. If not in 5 years, certainly in 50, everyone will know it." (Theodor Herzl)
