BBC investigation: Russia funds platform in Arabic that spreads "Fake News"

The BBC has revealed the existence of a UK-registered media company called Yalla News, which spreads "Fake News" to Arabic speakers around the world and is funded by Russia and run by a Syrian businessman.

The analysis process carried out by the BBC team showed that most of the company's media content is similar to news published on Russian-backed media sites. It has also shown that it operates outside of Syria.

The parent company of Yallah News has a strong social presence in cyberspace where it maintains twenty pages on the Facebook platform and produces content with completeness and professionalism.

The BBC said the company uploads engaging videos to its web pages and focuses on publishing useful stories for its followers, such as celebrity interviews, comedy pieces and global politics. He is followed by about three million Arabic-speaking people.

Belen Carrasco Rodríguez, a researcher at the Center for Information Resilience in the UK, confirmed that Yallah News serves as the Kremlin's mouthpiece in the Middle East.

After analyzing the timeline and similarities between articles in the Russian state media and Yalla News, Rodriguez estimated that the site could be a Russian "information laundering" platform; Propaganda on behalf of is published through a third party with no apparent connection to the Kremlin, something that Russia has done in the past and such action is no stranger to it.

Roarg Thornton, of the cybersecurity group Protection International, confirms that data laundering has become commonplace, and that people are more aware of government-sponsored Russian media.
