This ambitious plan of Egypt was announced on Wednesday, after a meeting between President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the CEO of the Italian energy company ENI. The two met to discuss Egypt's possibilities to increase production and output in the face of the crisis.
The Italian company is Egypt's main partner in the field of natural gas, and is responsible for producing about 60% of the country's gas, according to data from the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum.
Egyptian output is estimated at about 6.7 billion cubic meters of gas per day.
