US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered the Pentagon to increase its focus on China, who Washington sees its number one strategic opponent. 

"Now, the office has to go and work," Austin said yesterday (Wednesday) after issuing an internal memorandum and sending it to Pentagon professionals. The memorandum, the details of which are classified, was formulated following an assessment by a special team held by the Biden administration in February to examine the Ministry of Defense's strategy in relation to China.

"The initiatives I am promoting today are part of the broad approach of the United States government in relation to China, and they will help update the development of the national defense strategy that we are formulating," Austin said. A senior Pentagon official said the task force had identified the gaps between the statements and actions regarding Beijing's containment. "The provision today is intended to ensure that the ministry meets this preference," the Pentagon official said.
