Eurasian Stone-curlew spotted in Israel

Photographer Shlomo Waldmann bringing us this snap of the Eurasian Stone-curlew from June 4th, 2021.

The Eurasian stone-curlew was formally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Charadrius oedicnemus. He specified the locality as England. The name Oedicnemus had been used earlier by the French naturalist Pierre Belon in 1655. The species is now placed in the genus Burhinus that was introduced by the German zoologist Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger in 1811. The genus name combines the Greek bous meaning "ox" with rhis meaning "nose". The species name oedicnemus combines the Greek oidio meaning "to swell", and kneme meaning "shin" or "leg", referring to the bird's prominent tibiotarsal joints, which also give it the common name of "thick-knee". This is an abbreviated form of Thomas Pennant's 1776 coinage "thick-kneed bustard".

Mount Tabor

Ask a child to draw a picture of a mountain and the result will probably look a lot like Israel’s Mount Tabor: a simple sphere topped by a neat cap, surrounded by a green valley.

The modest pine-tree-covered peak — about 18 kilometers (11 miles) west of the Sea of Galilee — rises about 575 meters high (1,886 feet) at its highest point.

Situated at the top of the Jezreel Valley at an important crossroads, Tabor overlooks one of the two strategic highways of the ancient world used by merchants and conquering foreign armies from all directions. The rabbis of the Talmudic period called Mount Tabor “the navel of the world.”

Discover Enot Tsukim Nature Reserve

There are few historical sources relating to this nature reserve, the reason perhaps being the distance of the site from major settlements in the area. It is possible that the prophet Ezekiel is referring these springs in one of his prophecies about the Dead Sea becoming a fishing site, calling them 'En Eglayim' – "Fishermen will stand along the shore, from En Gedi to En Eglayim" (Ezekiel 47:10).

Just a few kilometers from Enot Tsukim is Qumran National Park, which became famous after the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

During the 19th century, European researchers came to the Dead Sea region. One of the most notable of these was the Scottish priest Henry Baker Tristram, who was called the "father of fauna and flora in the Holy Land", and who described the place with great enthusiasm. In his book "In the Land of Israel – a journal of travels 1863 – 1864", Tristram wrote that he stopped in the area with his scientific delegation and for two days, delighted in the sights.

Firefighters Successfully Contain Massive Wildfires Near Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, Israel – Firefighters in Israel have successfully contained several major wildfires in the Jerusalem area that forced some local residents to temporarily evacuate their homes on Wednesday.

The fire began in the hills surrounding Jerusalem on Mount Haruach and quickly spread to the communities of Ma'ale Hahamisha, Abu Ghosh,  and Neve Ilan. The fire also spread to nearby Mount Eitan.

More than 70 teams of firefighters and 10 planes battled the flames, which forced several roads and highways to close. Firefighters from the Palestinian Authority also helped bring the fire under control, Ynet news reported.

"We have taken control of the fire after great effort. We have managed to contain the fire in Ma'ale Hahamisha and stopped the danger to the other communities. We are currently engaged in fully extinguishing the fires," Dedi Simchi, head of the National Fire and Rescue Authority, told Israeli media.

One local resident who lives in the Judean hills described what he saw.

“I raced toward the fire to see what was happening,” he told the Walla news site. “There was a large flame and smoke… when I got closer I was scared it would reach me and I quickly turned around. It very quickly became a huge fire.”

Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Dry heat could have sparked the blaze but Israeli fire officials have not ruled out the possibility of arson, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Rosh Hanikra

Located as far northwest as you can travel in Israel before you cross into Lebanon, the grottos at Rosh Hanikra are a must-see attraction – and for good reason.

The brisk cable-car ride down is fun even if it’s no competition with its Swiss or Norwegian counterparts.

The gushing water in the grottos is exhilarating.

Beyond the grottos, the train tunnel to nowhere – once a part of a line that connected pre-1948 Palestine with Beirut – evokes a time when the Middle East’s borders were more porous.
