From Lithuania to Jerusalem - Return of the Holy Scriptures Some years ago, ancient scrolls of the Old Testament were returned to Israel, after a long struggle to retrieve them. The scrolls had been hidden since the Nazi occupation of Lithuania, and some of them were turned into wallpaper by the Nazis. About 350 ancient scrolls and scriptures, hidden in Lithuania during the Nazi regime during World War II, were brought to Israel. There were many lost and destroyed Bible scrolls from all over Lituania, during World War II when the Nazi’s murdered 94 percent of all Lithuanian Jewry. The Preservation of the Holy Scriptures is an interesting story in itself. With the rise of the Nazis to power in Lithuania, an order was issued to destroy all the holy books of the Jews. The books were collected in the church, but the local priest decided to hide them and make sure they were not destroyed. It was only 40 years later that the existence of the Judaica treasure was revealed. From an established and vibrant community before World War II, which numbered tens of thousands of people, today only 3,000 Jews remain, most of them adults. Half live in the capital, Vilnius, and the rest are scattered in cities and villages. Source: Walla News
