ON THIS DAY 1970: Arafat fails to assassinate King of Jordan

Jordan’s King Hussein survived an assassination attempt by Yasser Arafat’s fedayeen on this day in 1970.

It was the start of Black September with thousands of casualties. After almost destroying Jordan, the PLO fled to Lebanon.

The New York Times reported then:

The shooting was reported to have occurred at 5:40 P.M. near the Ein Gazal railroad station on the outskirts of Amman. Immediately afterwards Jordanian Army troops and Arab commandos, who are hostile to the King, began exchanging fire in and around the capital.
