A new bill set for a vote in Congress this week would require US War Secretary Pete Hegseth to present options for suspending American military aid to the Lebanese Armed Forces if it is determined that Lebanon is refusing to act toward disarming Hezbollah.
According to Al Arabiya’s Washington correspondent, the initiative comes as Washington’s deadline for Lebanon to dismantle the terror organization approaches rapidly.
Under the bill’s text, Secretary Hegseth must submit a report by the end of June detailing the Lebanese army’s progress in dismantling Hezbollah’s weapons infrastructure. The report must also present options to halt US assistance if it is concluded that Lebanon is “refusing” to take action.
President Trump’s administration has increased pressure on Beirut in recent months, with several senior officials visiting Lebanon to demand progress. Despite this, the terror group continues to reject any disarmament, and no meaningful advancement has been recorded.
