Conflicting reports over the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles on June 8 have raised serious questions about the level of US military support for Israel amid growing tensions between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israeli officials reportedly said American forces helped intercept missiles launched by Iran toward Israel. However, US officials speaking to CNN and CBS strongly denied that the American military had intercepted any of the missiles.
Another US source offered a different account, claiming that at least one US Navy vessel and American ground units launched interceptors as an act of “self-defense.” This may mean US forces acted only against missiles threatening American personnel or assets, rather than participating in the broader defense of Israel.
The conflicting accounts have fueled speculation that the Trump administration deliberately instructed US forces not to provide Israel with active defensive assistance during the latest Iranian attack. Such a decision would represent a sharp departure from previous confrontations, when American forces played an important role in defending Israeli airspace.
