According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), it appears that Morocco has already requested to purchase from Israel two "Ofek" spy satellites.
These satellites are known for their intelligence and security capabilities, and the Ofek-13 satellite that was launched recently should have the ability to take photos with a resolution of up to 0.5 meters. This request indicates that Morocco wishes to strengthen and upgrade its capabilities in the field of observation and intelligence.
Ofek-13, is an Israeli photography satellite. It was designed and built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for the Israeli Ministry of Defense and the IDF, and is operated by unit 9900. Ofek-13 was launched on March 29, 2023, from the Palmahim base in Israel and for its launch it used a "Shavit 2" rocket.
The Horizon-13 is considered to be the most advanced of its kind, with unique radar tracking capabilities, and is expected to enable intelligence gathering in all weather and visibility conditions, while improving strategic intelligence capabilities.
Morocco aims to achieve several goals by acquiring and launching Ofek satellites, including:
Strengthening space capabilities: developing and expanding the kingdom's space capabilities, especially after launching two satellites in 2001 and 2018.
Multiple uses: use of satellites in areas such as climate change control and monitoring, use in agriculture, defense, aviation and internet access.
International cooperation: cooperation with countries such as the United States, France, Spain and the United Arab Emirates in the field of space exploration.
Security and surveillance: use of satellites and drones for intelligence and observation purposes, which will help in the fight against illegal immigration, smuggling, crimes and terrorism.
Strengthening the economy: The development of space capabilities is seen as an important factor in accelerating Morocco's economic growth in various fields.
These goals reflect Morocco's desire to improve its technological and security capabilities, as well as strengthen its position as a leading country in the field of space on the African continent.
