Trump administration envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, praised Qatar over the weekend for fully funding the Azerbaijani gas supply project to Syria, which is expected to light up millions of homes in the country.
"We express our deep gratitude to Qatar for the full funding of the vital gas initiative for Syria," Barrack wrote on X.
Starting yesterday, the gas, transported from Azerbaijan through Turkey, is expected to generate 800 megawatts of electricity, enough for 5 million households in Syria, according to Barrack, who called the move "a bold and effective step for welfare and stability at a critical moment." He complimented Qatar for its "partnership and brave friendship."
This is the second phase of the project, which will last a full year. It will lead to a 40% improvement in electricity supply. This follows the first phase, which produced 400 megawatts. The total Qatari investment: over 760 million dollars.
