New information reveals that a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was assassinated by a Syrian officer from the Syrian army in the period before the overthrow of the Assad regime, in late November.
Iranian state media has previously attributed the death of Qomars Pourashemi to rebel militias.
On Sunday, December 22, CGTN Ankara reported, citing an Iranian security source, that Pourhashmi died after being shot by a Syrian officer during a meeting in a joint operations room in Aleppo shortly after the city fell to the rebels.
According to Yakup Aslan, the meeting included Iranian military advisers and Syrian army commanders and took place amid the advance of rebel forces on the outskirts of Aleppo.
