After about a week of riots, economic damages are starting to be assessed in France and they are many. According to conservative estimates, the damage so far to businesses alone is estimated at at least $1 billion, with 200 businesses looted as well as 300 bank branches and 250 stores destroyed. As mentioned, this estimate covers businesses and does not include damage to schools, municipal buildings or community centers.
Also, this estimate does not include the damage to transportation, including 5000 vehicles that were set on fire. Meanwhile, the government has already announced a series of reliefs for the business sector, including reducing or deferring tax payments.
To all of these must be added indirect damages and with an emphasis on tourism. The Paris tourist information desk estimates that the riots will result in the cancellation of 25% of tourist bookings to the French capital this summer. All this happens about a year before Paris is supposed to host the 2024 Olympics...
