The 'Amun news agency' quoted an official in the Jordanian army command as saying that forces in the Eastern Command today thwarted, at dawn, an attempt to smuggle large quantities of drugs from Syrian territory into Jordan after receiving early information from the military intelligence and anti-drug administration.
The source noted that the Jordanian forces fired on the smugglers, which led to the injury of some of them and the escape of others back to Syrian territory, noting that after searching the area large quantities of narcotics were found and transferred to the authorities.
This is not the first time Jordan has announced such actions. About two weeks ago, a military source stated that another drug smuggling attempt had been thwarted.
The source noted at the time that some smugglers were injured and others fled to Syrian territory, adding that after a search of the smuggling area, large quantities of drugs, Kalashnikov weapons and a quantity of ammunition had been found.
