Claims that a Palestinian man killed in Tripoli was targeted by an Israeli Mossad cell are unsupported and appear to have been fabricated on social media.
The shooting occurred on June 10, when gunmen in a passing vehicle opened fire on a group of young men in northern Tripoli. Safi Walid Ghazawi, a Palestinian resident of the al-Beddawi refugee camp, and Lebanese citizen Ayman Babani later died from their wounds. Ibrahim Azzam was also injured.
Lebanese media described the incident as an unexplained shooting by unidentified attackers. No official investigation has connected it to Israel, the Mossad, Hamas or an alleged infiltration from Syria.
Claims that Ghazawi served as a contact for Hamas terrorists, and that an Israeli cell escaped on a motorcycle, do not appear in credible Lebanese or Palestinian reports. His family described him as a self-employed civilian with no political or military affiliation.
