It's not just that the Saudis stopped financial aid to the Palestinian Authority and therefore are in no rush to renew it.
The recent talk about a possible renewal of Saudi financial aid to the Palestinian Authority in the context of a normalization agreement with Israel raises questions.
It is important to remember that the Saudis actually stopped aid in 2016 due to internal economic difficulties but also due to anger at the Palestinian Authority.
The Saudis felt that the Palestinians were repaying them with ungratefulness for the generous aid they had given them. Have the Saudis changed their minds? Not sure but in time we will know the answer.
The Saudis have good reason to feel hurt.
Between 1994 and 2020, the aid from the donor countries received by the Palestinians is estimated at about 40 billion dollars, most of the amount went to the PA coffers. Saudi Arabia is the Arab country that contributed the most - about 4 billion dollars. To this must be added at least another 2 billion dollars that the Saudis donated to the Palestinians through humanitarian and other organizations.
As far as the Saudis are concerned, they did not see any return, not even gratitude from the Palestinians, and therefore will not renew the aid now without getting something in return.
