The diplomatic fallout began after the European news website Euractiv reported on comments Kallas allegedly made during a closed-door, confidential meeting with officials in Mexico City.

Sa'ar publicly accused Kallas of acting in an "obsessive and appallingly unfair manner" against Israel.

He noted that because she failed to deny, address, or clarify the leaked remarks, he was left with "no choice but to sever all ties".
