Rishon LeZion is the fourth-largest city in Israel, located along the central Israeli coastal plain 8 km (5 mi) south of Tel Aviv. It is part of the Gush Dan metropolitan area.
Founded in 1882 by Hovevei Zion pioneers from the Russian Empire, Rishon LeZion has taken significant strides of development in its 138 years of existence. The city suffered from water shortage in its early years but soon recovered. The early 20th century saw multiple identity shifts until it was finally declared an Israeli city in 1950. The population at that time was around 18,000, having grown from just 100 at its inception.
