Greek Defense Minister says Israel once had closer ties with Turkey than Greece, but argues Ankara’s backing of Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood explains the shift.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias delivered a blunt message about the strategic divide shaping the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, stressing that neither Greece nor Israel is “anti-Turkish” by nature.
He recalled that 20–25 years ago Israel and Turkey enjoyed close relations—at times closer than Israel’s ties with Greece—and asked what changed.
Dendias answered his own question: Turkey’s support for Hamas, its refusal to express regret over the October 7 massacre in Israel, and its hosting of the Muslim Brotherhood.
