Syrian media reported that Iran had taken control of the tunnels dug by the rebel units in Al-Ahouta, Damascus, and added that there are reports that they are being used to store weapons while preventing Syrian army personnel from approaching the network of tunnels.
The North Press news site, citing a source familiar with the issue of tunnels in the area, stated that after the takeover of the Al-Ahouta region, Syrian army forces destroyed some of the tunnels' branches and closed them.
The website added that the regime forces guarded the three main tunnels connecting the towns, and no one knew anything about them due to the presence of factions affiliated with Iran, noting that the tunnels that were destroyed were the ones that posed a danger to the buildings above them.
The site cited another source who said that the tunnels in the central sector of Al-Ahouta in Damascus have been closed for a long time, but recently reports were received about Iran's use of them as operations rooms and warehouses for storing weapons and ammunition.
It should be noted that the tunnels under the town of "Duma" - DUMA, in the area of Damascus, are still closed and have never been used, due to the lack of Iranian forces who would like it, according to the source.
After the Syrian regime forces managed to regain control of the Al-Ahouta area in 2018, they began to uncover the network of tunnels that also reach the Jobar neighborhood, and worked to blow up some of them and hand over others to Iran to use.
