Israel’s Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Electreon, is promoting a first-of-its-kind project in Israel: a road that allows for wireless charging of the electric cars of the Haifa Metro train.
In the first phase of the project, the technology will be installed in five Superbus electric buses, which will be charged along sections of 1.6 kilometers along the route as well as statically at the end stations.
Electreon will be responsible for all aspects of the project, from deployment to operation and maintenance of the project in all its aspects for 12 months for 15.8 million Shekels ($4.21 million) with an option to extend and expand the scope of the contract for an additional 24 months.
The Ministry said wireless charging during the fleet’s operating hours while traveling and when stopping at the terminal will enable significant savings in operating costs and operating convenience, and will contribute to improving service and increasing frequency.
Electreon’s innovative technology will allow in the future to reduce the size of the battery, thereby reducing the load on the electricity network and reducing costs. Today, the buses are loaded at night, or during long stops at the terminal.
As part of the project, the contribution of wireless charging to the optimization of the service in the logistical, energy and operational aspects will be presented, and in preparation for a more extensive deployment of the charging infrastructure in preparation for the full transition of the fleet to electric buses. This project will be a professional and economic model for the rapid transit roads in Israel and around the world.
This is the second project of the Electreon company in the field of high-speed public transport, joining the project operated in the city of Trondheim in Norway.
