Disaffection in Russia due to the Ukraine war is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to recruit spies, US CIA chief William Burns has said.
Burns further said that his agency was not letting the opportunity go to waste. Burns also said that the armed mutiny by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin had shown the corrosive effect of the war on Russia. Burns cast the mutiny as an "armed challenge to the Russian state" but said it was an "internal Russian affair”.
He further added that the United States “has had and will have no part” in such a rebellion.
Meanwhile, Russia has accused the US of harassing its UN ambassadors by bombarding its diplomats with FBI recruitment ads. Moscow said that the ads were part of a harassment campaign aimed at undermining their work.
