How Putin’s War On Ukraine Is Making Kazakhstan Question Its Deep Ties To Russia
The war in Ukraine is dividing Kazakh society. Many in Kazakhstan are supporting and some have even taken up arms to fight against Putin’s forces.
Meanwhile, many Kazakh are also part of the Russian troop fighting in Ukraine. However, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is was unhappy with his people participating in a foreign war.
Tokayev has tried to balance his relations with both the West and Russia. Kazakhstan hosted the C5+1 meeting with the US even as it continues to abstain from UN resolution on Russia.
