Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken major action targeting the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Brotherhood, accusing them of supporting extremist activity and attempting to influence institutions inside Florida.
In late 2025, DeSantis signed an executive order officially designating both organizations as “foreign terrorist organizations” under Florida state authority, following a similar move by Texas. The order directed Florida agencies to block state resources, funding, contracts, and institutional cooperation connected to the groups or entities providing them material support.
Florida later passed additional legislation expanding the state’s authority to restrict funding, campus activity, and institutional partnerships connected to designated organizations.
DeSantis argued that Florida would not allow what he described as radical Islamist influence networks to operate freely inside the state.
