Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni approves a new security decree following mass violence that injured more than 100 police officers.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has approved a new security decree granting law enforcement expanded powers to confront violent rioters, in the wake of the January 31 Antifa riot in Turin that left 108 police officers injured.
According to the decree, police will receive broader legal tools to restore and maintain public order, including provisions for preventive detention, expanded self-defense protections for officers operating in high-risk situations, and wider authority to intervene preemptively against organized violent unrest. The move comes amid growing concern in Rome over escalating street violence linked to extremist groups operating under the banner of “anti-fascism.”
