What is behind the visit of the commander of CENTCOM to Sinai?

For the first time in history, the commander of the US Army's Central Command (CENTCOM), General Michael Corella, visited the Egyptian North Sinai Governorate, last Friday, and met with the commander of the Second Field Army, Major General Mohammed Rabia, who was responsible for "the task of combating terrorism and expelling the ISIS terrorist organization from the desert Sinai".

The visit of senior officials from the US military came only about two months after the attack carried out by the Egyptian soldier on IDF soldiers in the border area, and in addition they visited the Rafah crossing with Gaza, which is an important axis in the relationship between Egypt and Hamas.

Local sources in North Sinai told the 'Al-Arabi Al-Jadid' news website that "the American delegation visited the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, where they were hosted by the Egyptian army office inside the Rafah crossing, and also toured the border area separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt. The sources emphasized that this was "the first visit of a senior US military official to the North Sinai Governorate, and especially to the border area with the Gaza Strip and the Rafah Crossing".

The American delegation arrived in Egypt two days ago, after finishing a visit to Israel.

Later, the US Central Command published a statement, according to which Kurla visited the Rafah border crossing in North Sinai last Friday during his visit to Egypt. According to the statement: "General Kurla visited Egypt and met with the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Army, Major General Osama Askar in Cairo, and the commander of an army The second field, Major General Mohammed Rabia, at the Rafah border crossing in North Sinai."

The tour focused on shared security concerns, including border security, advanced joint training, including the upcoming Bright Star exercise, and opportunities to enhance the long-term US-Egypt military partnership," the statement said.

In light of the size of the delegation, the timing of the visit and the place of arrival, several questions have been raised regarding the real reasons for the visit to Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip. As well as a visit to the Rafah crossing, they also visited the border area where the Egyptian attack on IDF soldiers took place, at the same time as reviewing the strategic projects carried out by the Egyptian armed forces, in the energy, infrastructure, electricity and water sectors in the Sinai.

Mohnad Zabri, a security and military researcher, told Al-Arabi Al-Jadid, "The visit has two meanings:

The first meaning is that the Egyptian army was able to bring security to the region and suppress the activities of the terrorists to such an extent that they are not able to carry out a huge damage in order to carry out major attacks.

The second meaning is that all the American talk about the human rights situation in Egypt is a smoke screen, especially when it comes to Sinai, miles away from the places Corella visited, serious violations and abuses are being committed against the residents of Sinai by the Egyptian army.

The American side is aware of this, but it seems that what is said about their annoyance at these violations remains far from what is really happening on the ground."
