Israel recently launched a new submarine, INS Drakon, which is the first in the world to have modern missiles inside its command bridge (PIN).
The Israeli Navy is known for the secrecy that surrounds its submarine fleet, and it is estimated that it has 5 Dolphin-I/II submarines that carry missiles equipped with nuclear warheads - this is what the website specializing in military information - "Arabic Defense" claims.
The new INS Drakon submarine was recently launched without unnecessary media noise in Kiel, Germany.
This submarine indicates a significant increase in the capabilities of Israeli submarines.
A version of the successful Dolphin-II submarine, whose unique lines demonstrate the independent thinking of the Israeli Navy.
INS Drakon is larger than any previous Israeli submarine, and is much longer than the first two Dolphin-II submarines.
Even more striking is the huge "sail" (another name for the command bridge of the submarine). Apparently the large command bridge contains the new and advanced missiles installed in it.
The nature of the new missiles is still unknown. Apparently it is a ballistic missile, possibly with a guided warhead. Whatever it is, Israel keeps this information secret.
One of the two missile systems may be conventional and the other equipped with a nuclear warhead. This would enable ground attack missions while maintaining nuclear deterrence.
A more realistic explanation is that vertical firing tubes were added late in the design, perhaps even after construction had begun.
It may take some time, perhaps years, to decipher the capabilities of submarines. In fact, the Israeli Navy keeps some aspects of its current submarines secret, so we may not know everything about them, but when new pictures come in, some pieces of the puzzle may fall into place.
