The US military commander in the Middle East has issued a new warning against the threat of armed UAVs operated by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.
Major General Frank McKenzie said that drones are difficult to identify and destroy, and he admitted that the United States is having a hard time dealing with them. He said better ways should be found to deal with such attacks.
"We are working very hard to find technological measures that will allow us to be more effective against drones," Mackenzie said. He added that the U.S. military was trying to find ways to cut the connection between command and control between the drone and its operator, and to improve radar sensors to quickly detect the approaching threat, and find effective ways to film them.
“The military is working very hard. Still, I do not think we are where we want to be. ”
The remarks come in the wake of an incident in which an armed drone fired at U.S. soldiers near an airport in northern Iraq in April, causing a major fire and damage to the building. The United States blames Iranian-backed militia groups for such attacks.
Mackenzie said the militias were frustrated because they expected U.S. forces to leave Iraq after the deaths of Iranian Army Commander Qassem Suleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad airport last year.
"They believe they can carry out fairly low-level attacks that will not elicit a response, and yet create enough friction that will eventually cause us to leave," Mackenzie said. "I think that this creates a dangerous situation."
