General Erik Kurilla, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), played a key role in shaping Americaโs response to the current confrontation with Iran, according to a report in Politico.
Nicknamed “The Gorilla,” Kurilla is known for his hawkish stance on Iran and reportedly got everything he asked for — including the deployment of an additional aircraft carrier, more air defense systems, and extra fighter squadrons.
Sources said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was unable to resist the general’s assertive demands. Kurilla, who is nearing the end of his term, is reportedly less hesitant to challenge higher-ups — including President Trump — and is showing greater boldness.
The report also highlighted serious friction between Kurilla and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kane, who opposed the reallocation of major military assets to the Middle East.
