Recent months have seen an increase in the movement of suspected ISIS terrorists through the vast desert areas connecting Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa and Homs. Their movements have reportedly become easier than in previous years as they exploit political divisions, weak security screening and competition between armed forces operating in eastern Syria.

Some ISIS members are believed to have infiltrated local military and security bodies, including groups associated with the new Syrian army and the General Security forces. This allows the terrorists to operate under official cover while reducing suspicion.

A series of assassinations targeting local residents has also been reported in rural and semi-desert areas. The attacks resemble methods previously used by ISIS to intimidate communities, silence opponents and demonstrate that the organization remains active.
