US Envoy to Lebanon and Syria, Thomas Barrak, today called on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah in a post he published on X, warning of the consequences if it does not do so.
He said, "Regional partners are willing to invest, but this is on the condition that Lebanon regains its monopoly on legitimate force - exclusively under the Lebanese security forces. If Beirut continues to hesitate, Israel could act unilaterally – and the consequences will be severe.”
“Hezbollah’s foreign control undermines Lebanon’s sovereignty, deters investment, erodes public trust and is a constant red flag for Israel,” Barrak wrote in a post on X.
Barrak accused the Lebanese government of rejecting what he called the US “additional attempt” plan – a framework for gradual disarmament and economic incentives supervised by Washington and Paris. He claimed that “Lebanon refused to adopt the plan due to Hezbollah’s influence in the Lebanese Council of Ministers.”
