Morocco also expresses interest in a nuclear reactor

Morocco's interest, today, is focused on a small nuclear reactor called Linglong-1, developed by a Chinese government company.

Morocco has expressed interest in the Linglong-1 reactor, the first commercial small modular reactor (SMR) to undergo an IAEA safety review.

Representatives from Morocco participated in a visit to the Changjiang nuclear power plant in Hainan, along with representatives from other countries such as Turkey, Thailand and Jordan.

"ACP100 is definitely an option for Morocco. We are facing the legal and technical challenges of integrating nuclear energy into our energy mix. The final decisions are still pending," said Elhamer Almerbet, director general of the Moroccan Agency for Security and Safety in the Nuclear and Radiological Field.

The reactor can produce about 125 megawatts of electricity, suitable for remote areas or islands.

Morocco is considering this option as part of its strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Morocco also has a cooperation agreement with Russia in the field of the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, which includes the establishment and development of nuclear infrastructure and the design and construction of nuclear reactors.

Developing countries are running to China to test smaller nuclear reactors

Representatives of the international nuclear power industry are looking to implement small modular reactors (SMRs) to meet climate change goals and diversify the structure of energy sources in their countries, with many preferring technology coming from China.

Liu Hua, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation at the International Atomic Energy Agency, noted in his speech at the Interregional Workshop on Technological Development and Applications of Small Modular Reactors, currently taking place in Sanya, Hainan Province, southern China, that small and medium reactor projects are "game changers" . This could allow regions and countries to rapidly deploy nuclear power to mitigate climate change.

Liu said that nuclear energy provides a low-carbon, stable and environmentally friendly energy source.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, in 2022 there are more than 80 different small and medium-sized reactors in various stages of development around the world. The Global Times learned that currently, there are many demonstration projects for small and medium enterprises by countries such as China and Argentina, and countries such as the United States, France and South Korea are still mostly in the planning stage.
