Is there a threat to the rule of the head of the Chinese regime, Xi Jinping?
Rumors are widespread in China about attempts to undermine Xi Jinping's rule.
One of his opponents is apparently Zhang Yuxia, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, which Xi himself heads. The committee is run by 6 party members and currently two of Xi's loyalists have disappeared or been suspended from their posts. Which leaves Xi alone on the committee, while his opponent remains with his loyalists.
Zhang is a renowned general who participated in the Vietnam War and is considered a hero in China. Furthermore, Zhang met last year with Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser in the Biden administration, and with a senior Vietnamese official. All of this is increasing Xi's concerns, and he is reported to have recently launched an "investigation" against one of Zhang's loyalists.
