Yoni Ben-Menachem, a researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, says Hamas rule in Gaza is collapsing before our eyes.
In a recent analysis, he pointed to growing chaos on the ground and a clear disconnect between Hamas leadership in Gaza and abroad as signs of the breakdown of its civilian government.
He highlighted the recent elimination of Mohammed Sinwar, Mahmoud Shabani, and the entire Sinwar family, long considered the backbone of Hamas’ military wing, as a critical blow to the organization.
According to Ben-Menachem, Hamas’s increasing weakness, especially in the Khan Younis area, opens a strategic opportunity for the IDF. “If Israel defeats the remaining brigade there, after the operation in Rafah, the entire southern Gaza Strip will be in our hands,” he said.
He warned that Hamas may try to strike at both Israeli troops and American aid workers to sabotage humanitarian efforts. However, he stressed that cutting off aid is essential: “Denying aid will end their rule.”
On Jerusalem Day, Ben-Menachem called on Israelis to reflect on the dramatic shift since May 2021 when Hamas shot missiles at Jerusalem during the celebrations for Jerusalem Day:
“We now control Jerusalem and Gaza, while they’re buried deep underground.”
His conclusion was firm: “There is no other
way to bring calm to Gaza. We must impose full military control and implement the Trump plan for emigration.”
