A disturbing mystery is unfolding in Brooklyn after multiple videos showed groups of men entering and exiting New York City sewer manholes late at night, wearing headlamps, carrying shovels or equipment, and moving through underground infrastructure for hours.
According to reports, one group was seen at Bedford Avenue and Lynch Street in Williamsburg, while another similar incident took place several miles away in Gravesend. In one case, men reportedly entered around 1 a.m. and exited nearly three hours later.
In another, a vehicle appeared to drop off a group near a manhole before the men disappeared underground. The NYPD and New York City Department of Environmental Protection have inspected the areas, and officials said no immediate hazards or infrastructure damage were found. Police also said there is no apparent terrorism link at this stage, though the investigation remains open.
But the public reaction is justified. This is not merely a story about “weirdos” or urban explorers. Unknown men moving through a major city’s underground system at night, with equipment, in more than one location, should immediately raise serious security questions.
