Memphis sermon by Berkeley, California-based Imam Zaid Shakir: American Muslims who long for martyrdom can do so right here
California Islamic scholar Zaid Shakir of Zaytuna College in Berkeley said in a sermon at the Memphis Islamic Center on July 18, 2025, that Muslims in the United States have the opportunity to educate their neighbors and classmates about Islam and the oppression of the Zionist regime.
Comparing Muslims in the U.S. to those in Middle Eastern refugee camps who, he said, have access to rifles and can go shoot people, he asked: "How many Muslims have the opportunity to organize themselves right here in the belly of the beast? [...] You do that very well, you have a very good chance of becoming a martyr also, right here, just like Malcolm X."
