Both the Emirates and Qatar wanted to host the talks between Iran and the US, so why did Tehran prefer Oman?
Unless something unexpected happens, talks between the US and Iran will be held on Saturday with the aim of reaching a new nuclear agreement. The talks will be held in Oman, but it turns out that the Emirates wanted to host the talks, but the Iranians were the ones who opposed this option.
An Iranian political source explains that one of the reasons for the refusal to come to Abu Dhabi is the normalization between the Emirates and Israel. In addition, there is a dispute between the Emirates and Iran regarding sovereignty over three islands that Iran took over in the Gulf back in 1971. Another country that was interested in hosting the talks is Qatar, but relations between it and Iran have cooled recently due to differences of opinion on the issue of Syria and the fact that Qatar is not transferring $6 billion frozen in accounts in Qatar to Iran.
Oman has also mediated between Iran and the US in the past and has gained Tehran's trust, partly thanks to the assistance that the Gulf sultanate provides to the Houthis.
