UNIFIL said the discovery was made “in close coordination” with the Lebanese army.
The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Thursday that it had discovered, in coordination with the Lebanese army, a vast network of tunnels containing weapons and missiles in the south of the country.
“As part of their ongoing operations under Security Council resolution 1701, and in close coordination with the Lebanese armed forces, UNIFIL forces discovered an extensive network of fortified tunnels around the towns of Tir Harfa, Zabqin and Naqoura,” said UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tennenti.
Tennenti added that “the network of tunnels discovered included several hiding places, artillery pieces, several rocket launchers, hundreds of shells and missiles, anti-tank mines and explosive devices.”
