Amal Al-Hayya, the wife of senior Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya, said in a May 13, 2026 interview on Al-Jazeera that she is proud that four of her sons and five of her grandchildren were “martyred.”
She said that regardless of how long a person lives, “everyone eventually dies,” adding that death should be “honorable” and “for the sake of Allah.”
Al-Hayya also spoke about her son Azzam, saying that he had cried because he missed the opportunity to spend the war in Gaza, but that Allah ultimately granted him “martyrdom” while he was in Qatar. She described this as a “sweet miracle,” saying that the people of Gaza understand the reward for martyrs and are therefore willing — even happy — to sacrifice their children.
She also said that she raised her children on religion and faith, but did not intervene in their jihadi activities and did not know exactly what they were doing.
