China has sharply escalated its rhetoric against Israel, warning that it “will not allow لبنان to become another Gaza” and demanding an immediate Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
The statement, delivered at the UN Security Council on March 31, reflects a tougher Chinese diplomatic posture aimed at increasing international pressure on Israel while presenting Beijing as an alternative power broker in the Middle East.
China’s position includes a call for an immediate halt to hostilities, a demand that Israel withdraw all forces from Lebanon, and a warning that the “Gaza tragedy” must not be repeated there. Beijing is also reportedly trying to build broader support with Russia and Arab states for a stronger international push against Israeli military activity in Lebanon.
While this is not a military threat, it carries strategic significance. China is increasingly aligning itself with positions that serve Iranian interests, while continuing to avoid direct condemnation of Hezbollah or Hamas. At the same time, Beijing may be signaling that diplomatic pressure could eventually be accompanied by quiet economic measures, especially given past moves affecting Israeli-linked shipping.
