YONI BEN-MENACHEM -- Senior political officials in Jerusalem stress that the meeting set to take place tonight in Florida between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump is far from routine.
It is described as a highly sensitive encounter with broad regional implications, closely watched across the Middle East.
According to officials, talks will focus on several explosive issues: the Iranian nuclear and missile threat, the disarmament of Hezbollah, the possibility of a security arrangement between Israel and Syria, the future of the Gaza ceasefire, and above all whether — and how — to move forward with phase two of Trump’s peace plan.
Trump is said to want to signal to the Arab and Muslim worlds that he remains committed to advancing the plan despite resistance. Presenting a tangible diplomatic achievement, especially one that points toward ending the fighting in Gaza, would strengthen his image as an effective mediator, bolster his foreign-policy record ahead of November’s midterm elections, and potentially advance his Nobel Peace Prize ambitions.
