A report from the United Arab Emirates says that Issam Baidani, leader of the Syrian "Army of Islam" militia, was arrested at Dubai airport upon landing.
Baidani, who fought against the Assad regime during the civil war, is one of the confidants and advisors of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
According to the sources, Baidani has an arrest warrant for murder and abuse of civilians in Syria.
Along with Al-Baidani, the senior Syrian (former Al-Qaeda terrorist) Yasser Delwan was also arrested.
The two attempted to enter the UAE with Turkish passports, not Syrian ones (they claimed to have Turkish citizenship), and were arrested due to an Interpol arrest warrant that had been in place for about 3 years.
The Syrian Defense Minister held several talks with his Emirati counterpart to release the two.
