A Gaza doctor who harshly criticized Israel in opinion pieces published by The New York Times has been identified as a senior Hamas officer, according to Israel and a Jerusalem-based watchdog organization.
Hussam Abu Safyia, presented by the New York Times as a “pediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza,” is in fact a colonel in the Hamas terrorist organization, Israeli officials and NGO Monitor say.
According to NGO Monitor, Abu Safyia was photographed in 2016 wearing a Hamas camouflage military uniform at a ceremony celebrating the completion of Kamal Adwan Hospital. The image appeared on the Facebook page of Gaza Medical Services, an entity overseen by the Hamas-run health ministry.
The ceremony was attended by senior Hamas figures, including Gen. Abu Obaida al-Jarrah, Director of Military Medical Services Saeed Saoudi, and National Security Forces commander Col. Naeem al-Ghoul, according to the post.
