The US sharply condemned the Houthis for their continued detention of current and former local staff of the American mission in Yemen. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that the arrests and the sham legal process against these employees show once again that the Houthis rely on terror and repression to maintain their grip on power.
According to the statement, Washington demands the immediate release of all detained personnel and holds the Iran-backed group fully responsible for their safety. The episode adds to a long pattern of Houthi abuses, including attacks on shipping routes and regional destabilization.
