The head of Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, revealed that the agency thwarted more than 20 potentially deadly Iranian plots over the past year.
Ken McCallum stated on Thursday, October 14, that the UK faces a growing threat from hostile nations such as Russia, Iran, and China, while the terrorist threat remains “very high,” with al-Qaeda and ISIS still attempting to incite lone attackers.
He added that the number of people investigated for state-sponsored activities has risen by “35 percent,” and that “hostile states are increasingly turning to the same vile tactics typically used by terrorists.”
“In 2025, MI5 is dealing with a scale and variety of threats from terrorists and state actors greater than anything I’ve seen before,” McCallum said during his annual address at MI5 headquarters in London.
